'Please don't ask me to smile I' is a homage to black women and a reflection on the prevalent notion of the “Angry Black Woman”, a stereotype that characterizes black women as aggressive and hostile. Unfortunately, many black women are held to a higher standard when they are angry and they tend to repress their emotions out of fear. Through this painting, I want to unveil that all emotions are valid and I want to encourage the viewer to listen to the black women's experience from an unbiased lens.
